Example: put together an application
You have a one-page cover letter, a two-page CV, and a three-page certificate file. Add them in that order to make a six-page PDF. The merge tool joins whole documents; it does not automatically remove duplicate pages.
Before you start
Merging is useful when several documents belong together and your reader needs one file. Keep the source PDFs until you have opened and checked the combined result.
- Choose at least two PDF files. Images and Word files need to be converted to PDF first.
- Use files you own or have permission to process. Password-protected or damaged documents may not work.
- If only a few pages from a file belong in the final document, use Extract PDF Pages first.
Merge your PDFs step by step
- Open Merge PDF and choose two or more PDFs from your device. You can also drag files into the upload area.
- Check the Selected files list. Use the up and down arrows next to a file to put the documents in the desired order.
- Remove a file with its remove button if you added the wrong document. Recheck the list before processing.
- Select Merge PDFs. When Your file is ready appears, select Download.
- Open the downloaded PDF. Check its total page count, the first page of each source document, and the final page.
Understand the page order
The first document in the file list appears first in the merged PDF, followed by the next document. Pages inside each source PDF keep their original order. Moving a file changes where that whole document sits; it does not rearrange individual pages inside it.
A useful check is to add the page counts of your source documents. A two-page PDF joined with a four-page PDF should produce six pages. If your result has extra pages, look for duplicates or blank pages in the originals.
If merging does not work
- “Choose at least two PDF files”: add a second document. The merge task requires multiple PDFs.
- Wrong document order: move the files in the list and merge again. Download the new result rather than relying on an older copy.
- An unexpected blank or duplicate page: inspect the source documents. Remove unwanted pages with Delete PDF Pages.
- Processing fails or the tab becomes slow: try two smaller PDFs first. Close other memory-heavy tabs. Large or complex documents can exceed your device’s available memory.
- A protected or damaged file fails: try a readable, unprotected copy you are authorized to use. Renaming a non-PDF file to .pdf will not convert it.
What merging does and does not do
Merge PDF joins document pages; it does not edit their text, compress them to a target file size, or make scanned text editable. Interactive features such as forms, bookmarks, and signatures may not behave the same in the new document. Review important documents in the viewer you plan to use.
The files are processed in your browser for this tool. The combined file is saved when you download it. This does not remove your source documents from your device.
Put the guide into practice
Start with a copy of your document and check the result before sharing it.
