Example: make an application use A4 pages
An application contains a Letter page and a smaller certificate page. Choose A4, Match each original page, and a 10 mm margin. Both output sheets use A4 dimensions. The larger content shrinks to fit; the smaller certificate is centered at its existing size unless you enable enlargement.
Choose a paper format rather than a file-size target
Resize PDF changes the physical dimensions of the output sheets. It is useful when a submission requires A4, or when documents with different page sizes need a consistent print format.
A4 measures 210 × 297 mm. Letter measures 8.5 × 11 inches, and Legal measures 8.5 × 14 inches. Landscape uses the same dimensions with width and height exchanged.
If your problem is an upload size limit in megabytes, use Compress PDF instead. Changing the paper size does not guarantee a smaller file.
Resize your PDF step by step
- Open Resize PDF and choose one PDF from your device.
- Inspect the previews. They show the original pages rather than a live simulation of the output.
- Choose A4, Letter, or Legal under Paper size.
- Choose Match each original page to keep portrait and landscape pages, or select one orientation for the whole document.
- Choose a 0, 10, or 20 mm outer margin. Leave enlargement off to keep smaller content at its existing size, or enable it to scale smaller pages up to fit.
- Select Resize PDF, then Download. Open the result and verify its page sizes, page count, and content before uploading or printing.
Understand fitting, margins, and enlargement
The tool scales the visible area of each source page equally in both directions and centers it on the new sheet. A wider source placed on a portrait sheet may leave extra white space above and below. This keeps proportions rather than stretching the content.
The outer margin is a minimum gap between the fitted source page area and the new sheet’s edge. Existing white space inside the original PDF is part of the source page and is retained, so the total visible margin around text can be larger.
Without enlargement, smaller pages keep their content size and are centered on the larger sheet. With enlargement enabled, they scale up proportionally. Enlarging an existing low-resolution scan can make it look soft; resizing does not restore missing image detail.
Handle rotated pages and mixed orientations
Match each original page uses its visible orientation, including any rotation already stored in the PDF. A portrait and a landscape source page become portrait and landscape sheets of the selected format.
Choosing Portrait or Landscape changes the output sheet orientation for every page. The source content still keeps its visible direction and proportions. For example, landscape content fitted onto a portrait sheet remains landscape content surrounded by more white space.
If the content itself is sideways, use Rotate PDF to correct it. Selecting a portrait paper sheet does not automatically turn sideways text upright.
Check common resizing problems
- Content looks smaller than expected: a large source page may need shrinking to fit the chosen margins. Try a smaller margin or the other sheet orientation.
- A small source stays small: enable Enlarge smaller pages to fit if you want it to fill more of the new sheet.
- There is more white space than the selected margin: the original page may contain its own margins, or its aspect ratio may differ from the new sheet.
- The PDF did not become smaller in bytes: resizing changes sheet dimensions. Use Compress PDF for file-size reduction.
- The file does not process: try a readable, unprotected PDF you are authorized to use. Damaged pages or invalid page boundaries may fail.
- Printed output appears scaled again: check the viewer’s print settings. Fit to printable area may apply another size adjustment; inspect print preview before printing.
Review the result and keep the original
Resizing runs in your browser. Your chosen PDF content is not uploaded to FreePDFsTools for processing. The original stays on your device, and you download a new document.
The output uses the existing visible page contents without rasterizing text and vector artwork. It does not improve image resolution or reproduce interactive document features. Forms, comments, clickable links, bookmarks, and digital signatures may not carry over. Use a static copy and review important outputs.
An existing crop boundary is respected visually. Resizing is not secure redaction and does not guarantee removal of hidden information. Check every page before sharing a confidential document.
