Example: reuse the text of a report
You have a PDF report with selectable paragraphs and want to revise its wording. Convert it to DOCX, open it in a word processor, and edit the extracted text. Expect to rebuild headings, tables, and other formatting where necessary.
Check whether the PDF contains text
Open your PDF in a viewer and try selecting a sentence. If you can copy that sentence and paste it as readable text, the PDF is a good candidate for this tool.
A scan is often a picture of a page. If you can select only an image, or copying produces no words, the document may need optical character recognition (OCR). FreePDFsTools PDF to Word does not include OCR. Some scanned PDFs already have a selectable text layer and may work.
Convert PDF to Word step by step
- Open PDF to Word and choose a PDF with selectable text. You can also drag it into the upload area.
- Select Create Word file and wait for processing to finish.
- When Your file is ready appears, select Download. The result is a DOCX file.
- Open the DOCX in Microsoft Word or another word processor that supports DOCX.
- Compare the result with the original PDF. Check paragraph order, page breaks, special characters, headings, and any information from tables.
- Make your edits and save the document. Retain the original PDF as a reference.
What to expect in the Word file
This tool extracts selectable text into an editable document. It is best for reusing words rather than reproducing the original page design. Images, complex tables, columns, and exact positioning may not carry over.
A PDF can store text in small fragments rather than in reading order. Multi-column pages, headers, and footers can therefore produce text that needs rearranging. Even when a conversion completes, review the content before relying on it.
- Use the result as an editable starting point.
- Rebuild table structure and formatting where needed.
- Compare numbers, dates, names, and symbols with the source.
- If you only need to share the original appearance, keep the PDF instead of converting it.
If the conversion is empty or looks wrong
- No text appears: check whether the source is an image-only scan. Use an OCR service or application first, then try a PDF with a text layer.
- Text appears out of order: compare it with the source and rearrange the paragraphs. Complex columns and tables often need manual cleanup.
- Characters are missing or incorrect: fonts and text encoding in the PDF can affect extraction. Check symbols and figures against the original.
- The file cannot be processed: try opening the original in a viewer. A damaged or protected file may require a readable, authorized copy.
- Processing is slow: try a smaller PDF or extract only the pages you need before conversion. Device memory limits can affect large files.
File handling and final checks
This conversion runs in your browser. Your selected PDF content is not uploaded to FreePDFsTools for processing. The DOCX becomes a separate file on your device when you download it.
Before sending an edited document, check it in the word processor you will use. If you save it back to PDF, inspect that new PDF too; font substitutions and changed margins can move text onto different pages.
Put the guide into practice
Start with a copy of your document and check the result before sharing it.
